Kitteria (Kitt) Mayo serves as the Mental Health Ambassador for the Virginia Community Health Worker Association (VACHWA) and is employed by The Health Collaborative as the Danville Chapter Coordinator. With more than 32 years of experience working with individuals facing mental health challenges, Kitt has dedicated her career to supporting those living with Alzheimer’s, dementia, schizophrenia, mood disorders, and other conditions. Her professional journey began in long-term care facilities, where she worked directly with patients and their families. Five years ago, she transitioned into public health, taking on leadership roles in awareness and advocacy. She started as the Chair of Walk Teams for the Danville, VA Alzheimer’s Association and now serves on several key initiatives, including the West Piedmont Trauma and Resiliency Taskforce, the Veterans Suicide Prevention Taskforce, and the Resiliency and Substance Abuse Prevention Taskforce. She is also a certified Mental Health First Aid Trainer. Kitt’s passion for mental health advocacy is deeply personal. Inspired by her father, a Vietnam Veteran who returned home struggling with mental illness and substance use after his second tour of duty, Kitt witnessed firsthand the impact of untreated trauma. With compassion and determination, she has made it her mission to connect individuals and families with the resources they need to heal and thrive. Born and raised in Danville, Virginia, Kitt is also a proud mother of two. She holds certifications in Nonprofit Management and Executive Nonprofit Management from Duke University, as well as a certification in Strategic Doing from Purdue University.
